Friday Night Movie – Volume 2 ‘In Which We Serve’
Tonight’s film is the British World War II classic ‘In Which We Serve’. This film, directed by David Lean and Noel Coward, is the story of a ship, a British Destroyer HMS Torrin, and its crew. The story is told through flashbacks about the crew members as they fight to stay alive in a rubber life raft following the sinking of the ship by the Nazis.
The International Movie Database says of the plot of the film:
This is the story of a British Naval ship, HMS Torrin, from its construction to its sinking in the Mediterranean during action in World War II. The ship’s first and only commanding officer is the experienced Captain E.V. Kinross who trains his men not only to be loyal to him but to the country and most importantly, to themselves. They face challenges at sea and also at home. They lose some of their shipmates in action and some of their loved ones in the devastation that is the blitz. Throughout it all, the men of the Torrin serve valiantly and heroically.
It is a cracking yarn and is one of my favourites. I hope you enjoy it too. It is full of stunningly drawn characters and truly represents and honours those many ordinary people, who during that extraordinary time, became absolute heroes.
