Is there more of this sort of alleged corruption in our justice system?

January 13, 2014

For the obvious reason of sub-judice I cannot comment directly about this ongoing case where charges related to corruption at Barkingside Magistrates Court in East London have been brought. I’ve put some of the already published details of this case below. These charges and the nature, circumstances and alleged perpetrators of these offences do raise a huge question. That question is: how many other British courts may have the sort of misconduct that has been alleged has gone on, going on?

Here’s the first link from the Independent newspaper of 11th January 2014 outlining charges in this particular case.

The Independent said:

A trainee barrister is among more than 20 people charged with criminal offences in a corruption investigation at an east London court.

The Metropolitan Police probe at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court looked into conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office, bribery and perverting the course of justice.

Two people stand accused of misconduct in a public office and 21 more are charged with perverting the course of justice.

More than 40 people were originally arrested by officers from Redbridge borough but 15 were released without further action and others may still be charged.

The corruption investigation, codenamed Operation Theemin, started in 2011, when a national newspaper alleged a court clerk was taking bribes from driving offenders to avoid entering records, allowing them to avoid licence points and fines.

Munir Patel, then aged 21 of Green Lane, Dagenham, was jailed for six years in November 2011 after admitting misconduct in a public office, perverting the course of justice and bribery.

Southwark Crown Court heard he approached offenders to offer his illegal services, sending a text message to one target reading: “I only do this for Asian bruvs. I do this all day long.”

Patel was the first person to be jailed under the Bribery Act.

The suspects, aged between 20 and 33, are from various parts of east London.

All 23 have been released on bail to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday.”

And this one from the Ilford Recorder

“Twenty three people will appear in court today following the investigation into corruption at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court.

Operation Teemin was conducted by Redbridge Police to investigate conspiracy to commit misconduct in public office, bribery and perverting the course of justice.

You will note that 14 out of the 23 names in the above article appear to be Islamic names. It would therefore be pertinent to ask whether Islamic staff at other courts are acting entirely within the law, or whether similar corruption investigations should be made elsewhere. We’ve had other cases where Islamic staff in the public services have leaked information for their own benefit, and the police really should examine very carefully the probity and ethics of our Islamic public servants.

After reading this story and other information relating to this case and those like it, are you still confident that justice in the UK will be fair, honest and open, or is it being bought?

Again this is a sub judice issue that I really shouldn’t comment on as it is still going thorugh the courts. However, I’m really not surprised that a) these alleged offender was connected with the London Borough of Newham, a once decent area ruined by Islam, and b) to see that this suspect appears to be a bearded savage.

Agreed. But the problem is not the issue of race, but of third world backward headspace.

    Dear Author,
To use the fact that some of these criminals have ‘Islamic names’ to further your cause is imbecilic. Its pointless. Foe the 14 people here who are obvioulsy muslim, there are thousands who are contributing positively. If some muslims have gone down the wrong path, so be it. But so have people who have christian names like David and James, yet I dont see anyone saying that Christianity should be examined. Your argument doesn’t add up. Sorry

If it wasn’t for the fact that although Muslims are a minority of the population they certainly seem to produce more than their fair share of rapists, sexual exploiters, violent offenders etc etc. I’m afraid that there have been so many examples of some quite bestial criminals who hail from the Islamic community and have used Islamic theological and cultural justification for their crimes, that the ‘tiny minory of extremists/rapists/paedophiles’ line really doesn’t wash anymore. I agree that there are thousands of ‘culural Muslims’ who contribute to society and are law abiding, but there are enough who are not, to cause a considerable amount of genuine co0ncern.

      Dr Harry,
As an ex Muslim please allow me to point out that within the Asian community (read Muslim here) that loyalty to the: Family, comes before the law of the land. Yes you are correct that non-Muslims are also guilty of such discretions, however the fact remains throughout the Western world the % of Muslims locked away vastly out number their % in the country they live in. For example in the UK while Muslims represent around 2-3% of the population they represent over 15% of the prison population, in France I’ve read it is over 50%.
In the West we pride ourselves on subscribing to the law of the land, however when you have one element doing as it pleases , then not only do we have a recipe for disaster, but by continually refusing to address that problem (by playing the victim, race, minority card) then all we will see is a huge gravitation to the far right.

muslims make up only 3% of the UK population yet represent over 50% of those accused of bribery. No the authors concerns are no imbecilic!
